City Council Votes to Mandate the Use of Face Coverings and Social Distancing Until June 19

Ladies and Gentlemen,

During Governor Newsom’s recent briefings, reopening of the California economy will be at least partly based on reducing current COVID-19 infections and preventing future spikes. While not currently mandated by the State or the CDC, the CDC highly recommends face coverings to reduce the transmission of the COVID-19 virus.

During last night’s City Council meeting, the City Council voted to require face masks be worn by all residents, employees and customers in Cathedral City. Below is a summary of the Emergency Order No. 3. I have also attached the full order.

Emergency Order No. 3 Download EO-No3.pdf

The Council’s goal with this emergency order is to:

  1. Reduce or eliminate new COVID-19 infections within Cathedral City;
  2. Protect the vulnerable population within Cathedral City. The CDC-defined vulnerable population within Cathedral City constitutes over 20% of our 55,000 resident population;
  3. Provide a safe environment for concerned or vulnerable Coachella Valley-wide residents to shop; and the ultimate goal
  4. Putting the COVID-19 crisis behind us so the entire economy may fully recover.

I respectfully request your support in implementing this policy with your employees, and, while potentially more challenging, your customers. This order is akin to the no shoes, no shirt, no service. Our new moto for the time being needs to be: “No shoes, no shirt, no mask, no service”. It will be the store’s responsibility to enforce this order within your store. If a customer choses not to comply with this Cathedral City law, please explain you, as a business, are not allowed to serve them and will be held responsible for the customer’s failure to comply with this emergency law. While this order is effective immediately, please know the City understands businesses need time to post necessary signs and acquire any additional supplies.

In closing, thank you for your support and patience as we all work through this challenging environment. Your business is an integral part of the Cathedral City tapestry of businesses. It is this tapestry which makes  Cathedral City a welcoming place to call live, work, and raise a family.

Please email me if I may be of further service.

Respectfully submitted,

Dr. Stone James
